PTTLS

The QCF Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) and Award in Education and Training (AET) is an initial teacher training qualification, studied at QCF Level 3 or 4

The PTLLS / AET is currently the lowest of the teaching qualifications specifically for this sector of education. The PTLLS is the first stage of a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) in Lifelong learning and is currently required prior to achieving the CTLLS and DTLLS to gain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. It is a requirement that all teachers obtain the PTLLS award, or the equivalent, to be able to continue to teach in the further education sector in the UK.

Who is this course for?

  • People who wish to work in the lifelong learning sector as a teacher, trainer or associate teacher or technician.

  • This course will form part of the DTLLS (Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector). It may be taken as a separate course.

  • People new to teaching, or wanting to start out as associate teachers, or currently teaching in the UK and requiring certification or qualification,

  • People who want to become full teachers in Further Education (FE) or in the Lifelong Learning sector of education.

Entry requirements

  • Level 3 qualification and/or relevant experience in the subject you intend to teach.

  • Minimum Level 2 literacy and numeracy or equivalent (if you wish to take this course as part of DTLLS you must have a Level 3 qualification in the subject you intend to teach).

  • The learner/associate teacher/trainer does not have to be in a teaching role in order to be assessed

What will I study?

  • The role of the tutor and the interrelationships with other professionals

  • Referral systems

  • The characteristics and aspirations of the adult learner

  • Methods and resources used in adult classes

How will I be assessed?

  • Written assignments (4)

  • 4 journals at the end of each assignment

  • Micro-teaching for 20 mins (self-evaluation, tutor observation and peer assessment)

What can I do after the course?

  • Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) or Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS).

  • An associate teacher would then have to take the more advanced CTLLS for the Certificate and after that the DTLLS for the Diploma.

Class size: Max 15 (average class size 10)
