Certificate in Education and Training level 4 (CET) formerly CTLLS

The Certificate in Education and Training is designed for those in an associate teaching role, or for those looking to progress to the full Diploma or Certificate in Education/PGCE.

The award covers the knowledge, understanding and skills required for session planning, negotiating learning goals, designing teaching, design and use of resources, and learning and assessment strategies.

Entry Requirement

  • Level 3 qualification in their subject area or employer endorsement that they are working at an appropriate level

  • Students should have at least 30 hours of voluntary or paid teacher experience.

  • On entry onto the course you will be required to undertake diagnostic assessment in Maths, English and ICT and formulate an action plan based on the results

  • For the duration of the course you will need a mentor and this should be someone with appropriate subject specialist knowledge who will be able to help and support you though the programme.

An application form must be completed and an interview may be required.

What will I study?

  • Understanding roles and responsibilities

  • planning to meet the needs of the learner,

  • delivering education and training assessing learners and using resources

  • Action research project in an area relevant to your own specialism. The teaching practice will have to run concurrently with the course and you will need to evidence this through schemes of work, lesson plans, evaluations and resources.

  • Additional home study required – You will be expected to work independently at home. Home study usually takes at least five hours per week. Home study forms an essential part of the course and will be needed if you are to take a full and active part in class activities.

Exams and Assessments

  • For each unit you will be required to provide written evidence to satisfy the learning outcomes. This will consist of a range of formal written academic assignments, documentary evidence such as schemes of work and lesson plans, and in class presentations.

  • You will be required to produce a portfolio of appropriate evidence along with supporting documentation.

  • you will be observed three times during the course – two by the course team and one paired observation between a member of the course team and the student’s own mentor.

What next?

After achieving this certificate, you can chose to further study by completing

  • Certificate in Education or Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) (Direct to year two, subject to an on-line top up requirement).

  • Diploma in Education and Training (DET) or Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS), (our PGCE covers all of the DTLLS requirements).

Employment as an associate teacher/trainer.
